Reducing Manufacturing Lead Time
A German owned company manufacturing medical parts in the UK benefited from a long-term agreement with Oxford Engineering to call off parts when required – reducing manufacturing lead time. This large account consists of a number of components per kit delivered in volume. The manufacturing process uses forgings which are sourced through a supply agreement from both the UK and Eastern Europe, they are machined and kitted up into sets for delivery to the customer. Normal lead time is 16 weeks but the agreement enables the customer to call off 40 kits per week – with only a week’s notice. Oxford Engineering achieves this by lean manufacturing in kanban quantities and consignment stocking, using state of the art machine tools that can run at 20,000 rpm achieves extreme productivity. To drive costs down parts are machined at Oxford Engineering’s Estonian company. The customer derives all the benefits of JIT as well as the economies of a lean manufacturing process.
A Total Solution
Oxford Engineering won a contract on price to manufacture housings for an American company – against worldwide competition. The customer benefits from extremely good value for money given the number and complexity of features. Coupled with the complexity of the part, the final process involves black NituffTM anodising and the fitting of various thread inserts, dowels and pins. Oxford Engineering were able to give the customer a total quality solution ready to build – at a competitive price.
Collaborative Cost Reduction
By working together with the customer, Oxford Engineering can effectively reduce costs. As a first tier supplier Oxford Engineering can offer savings direct to the end user in collaboration with supply partners, low cost overseas sources and utilising lean manufacturing techniques, value engineering and design improvements, making significant cost savings possible. A large multi-national medical company benefited from this cost effective way of working together. Winning the business on the basis of projected savings, Oxford Engineering was able to save the customer 21% over a year. Incremental cost savings over time benefit the customer – making products more competitive for the end user, thus improving sales volumes. Savings are shared, with no loss of margin, improving business profitably for the whole supply chain
